How do you tell when someone looks at you because they fancy you, or if they are simply looking your way or at someone else.

If they're looking in your direction smile at them. If they smile back at you, chances are they're interested in you

Well if some one is looking at you they like you so smile back, say hello when passing by them, the may well be shy and would like to say some thing to you so don't wait,go for it girl, you may just find it could lead to some thing and if not then you have lost nothing,a look a smile,a hello don't do any harm, good luck, keep smiling

............and a smile requires fewer muscles than a frown, thus saving energy and contributing to the battle against global warming. On the other hand it could, ultimately, lead to activities that actually contribute to it.

So, what to do? Personally I'd rather see a smile, so go for it.

Good luck

are there any good ways of knowing if someone you're sort of friends with is interested in you in that way?

Try flirting, guessing or asking outright. They're all equally valid (or not, as the case may be).

You pays your money and you takes your pick.

ask them

"hey, your not flirting with me, are you ?"

...(blah,blah answer)

"oh, don't stop i like it"

between two people there's either a friendship vibe or a lover vibe
they are very distinguishable

Not always.

If they were so readily distinguishable there wouldn't be so many false starts to relationships.

Well that's true

For me it's a natural dynamic
If i feel something for her
I will tell her
(Hell, I won't have to tell her, she'll feel it)

If she doesn't reciprocate
(Then I'll feel that)

Yes, a slap in the mouth does have a certain dynamic about it.
