The growth of the internet has made this a popular concept for many people. But can these relationships really work, or are they just a clever & cynical ruse for foreign women to gain quick and easy UK citizenship?

WHAT DOES IT COST ?

First, let me say that I learned the hard way about the advantage of having a professional marriage broker handle the communications. Even with women that I wrote and said they "spoke" English the differences in customs can lead to misunderstandings and destroy potential relationship. For me one such example was a woman I gave out my @hotmail.com account to. Based on that she was sure I was a pornographer and stopped communications. (In the USA we realize how silly this is but for her she was sincere in her disbelief). So if you are serious about a mail order bride figure part of the cost is going to be a translator to help you bridge both the cultural and communication gap. (If your translator has previously lived in the USA she/he will be much better because they will understand both cultures). This will run you about $4-8 dollars per letter and when you are in country plan on paying a translator from $8-15 per hour. For me this was some of the best money ever spent.
Second, you will need to travel to the Ukraine, Russia or wherever because USA immigration laws require at least one face to face meeting for your mail order bride to get a K-1 Fiancee VISA. My wife is from the Ukraine. The first time I flew to meet her my airfare was $1300.00 but airfare fluctuates widely and I have flown roundtrip to the Ukraine for as little as $600.00. When you get to Kiev you will need to stay in a flat (which your translator can arrange for) and the price fluctuates from $40.00 to $90.00 depending on the quality, location and time of the year that you are booking the flat. Because it is a cash society (most places outside of Kiev don't take credit cards) you will need to carry cash. For me I bring $200.00 per day for spending money but honestly that has prooven to be more than I actually needed (I travelled to the Ukraine for three times before I was certain that my wife was who I wanted to spend the rest of my life with and she with me . . . .and we wanted our children to meet each other and spend time together).
Third, once you have selected your bride you will need to file a K-1 Fiancee VISA application with Homeland Security/Immigration and Naturalization Service. The cost to file is aprox. $450.00 but there are a number of documents which you will need your translator to translate from Russian to English for the filing. I paid another $250.00 to the translator for this service. Also, once immigration approves your K-1 status your fiancee will need to travel to Kiev for her interview with the American Consulate and to get a physical from the designated consulates medical doctor there in Kiev. Plan on that costing another $1,000 for travel, related and actual cost.
In addition, if you trust your translator follow her advise. There will be times that she will tell you to pay something or do something that your instinct may say not to but you will just need to trust the translator. One such example was when my fiancee wanted me to pay for her text messaging me. I fiqured it was the beginning of "the ****". But my translator explained that text messaging was costing my fiancee 20 cents per message and it was unreasonable of me to expect her to pay $20 per month in text messages to me when my fiancee only earned $250.00 per month from her salary.

Another (non monetary) time was my fiancee was offended by my whistling/singing in the house. I thought she was joking. My translator explained that like the USA (in the South you understand how important it is to say "Bless You" after someone sneezes) the Ukraine was full of tales and superstitutions that people still believed.
Finally, a cost that I had but you may not is my wifes teeth were in terrible condition (under the FSU medical care was provided by the state but dental care was a cash commidity and since most people didn't have the cash the nations teeth are in terrible condition) and I elected to pay $1,500 to a dentist (my translator held the money and then paid the dentist directly) so my wife could have dental care taken care of prior to leaving the Ukraiine. Had I paid for the same dental care in the USA it would have cost $10,000.

Hope this helps on the cost of a "mail order bride". It isn't cheap but then the price I paid was nothing compared to the happiness I have every single day.
p.s. I was 50 when I married my wife and she was 29. We are now raising to wonderful children together. I'm truly living the dream and so can you.

How many "unemployed", or "gangsters" or "unemployed gangsters" or "Eastern Europeans" or "gangster Europeans" do you know Sarah ?
The Midlands must resemble the Ukraine in some way ?
Is it the climate or the general dourness that draws them like a magnet ?

Most of the Eastern Europeans I know are gainfully employed in hotels or on building sites. Though there are apocryphal stories of gangs of them roaming the streets of Ipswich at night (probably Transylvanians)

Well according to a report I read over the weekend, Police think there could be as many as 300 East European gangsters in East London alone. It didn't say how many they thought were hiding in Brum!

I have a friend who went out with an Estonian girl who was working over here
and he did say she was very homely
she held to the belief that he was the bread winner
she was the hausfrau
she deferred to him as 'man of the house'

He didn't like that, or wasn't used to it
so he broke up with her

Sarahstheone, please try and avoid black and white/either or thinking.

Been there and got the tee shirt.

Contact me if you want the full story.

The art of not being decieved is in the avoidance of false dichotomies!

This is not "either or" thinking.

If this does not entertain you enough, then return to the world of gossip. opinion, tittle-tattle, Oprah and that insufferable little twat, Jeremy Kyle!

The Middle Way is devoid of extreme thinking.

I hope to be able to achieve that skill one day.

I saw one Daily Mail headline announcing:-
" 1  in  10 Poles (or whatever) claiming benefits"

I had to laugh
does that mean that 90% of them were gainfully employed
paying tax and contributing to the UK economy

I had this Polish woman explain to me their educational structure
In a uk uni you get 8 hours of lectures a day
in poland they get 8 hours a day

when the do history, they don't do part of history
they like start at the beginning and just cover it all

I think we sort of had that attitude in times gone
but they still have it

they just work harder
even builders will say that young UK lads don't want to turn up or get side tracked too easily

I accept your correction.  I earned it!  I am an advocate of alternative thinking.  It's as if Western society has the monopoly on logic!

Sorry for insulting you.  It was not my intention.
