This phrased is used as a marketing ploy.

Originally, their name does not contain their age or anything else, so you have to browse them just to find out.
But that doesn't mean you have expressed any interest in them.
This is why internet dating is so phoney.
In a pub or supermarket you know whether a guy fancies you or not.
You see what you getting, here it's all hit & miss or downright phoney.

What difference does it make if they have browsed you ?
I might browse the Times everyday or a shopping list, I don't record the fact in my diary as being memorable or significant.
